One of the bravest things I have ever done is to accept an invitation from an Indian friend to watch Pak-India cricket match – Semi Finals, World Cup, 2011. (Sher key moon kein haath)The moment I received the message on my phone (at that time BBMing was the fad) my little Blackberry turned into a shades of orange, green and white and my head could easily be substituted for the spinning wheel on the Indian flag.
Pakistan faced a dismal defeat, although I was wearing a shirt with a glittering Pakistani flag and cheering with all my might. But three Indian friends surrounded me, and they were certainly louder than me. What ensued during and after the match were unending fits of laughter, innumerable selfies, consuming huge slivers of pita with hummus and cream cheese dips and homemade cupcakes with blue and green frosting. And that I feel was the knockout!
I made my first set of Indian (Bongs, Bangalorians and Bombayitens) friends in Singapore and found them down to earth, genuine and extremely non-pretentious. Glued to their beliefs and cultures yet tolerant and accepting of others’. Hospitable and downright fun! Individual or collective - an absolute cool crowd!
Talking of cool crowds, I have something very cool, calming, creamy and coconutty for you as part of my ‘Twisty Thai’ series. Enter Coconut Ice cream with pomegranate, please. A refreshing whiff, delicately smooth texture, spattered with fresh, juicy, crimson pomegranate seeds – is a complete crowd pleaser or else worth eating as a celebration when your home team wins.
