A friend suggested that perhaps I should continue the brief candid explanations of ayahs or surahs, like in the previous Friday blogging. So here goes another brief, yet extremely powerful surah from the Quran.
“Would you ask others to be righteous and forget to practice it yourselves?
Even though you read your Holy Book?
Have you no sense?
Surah Al Baqarah 2:44
Honestly speaking the last question seems as if I am addressing my children. And in the Quran, Allah asks the same from HIS creation. This ayah originally addressed to the Bani Israel, is actually an introspective question for all societies, communities and individuals and for all times to come.
The Holy Book constantly urges mankind to be reflective, analyzing our own vices before being judgmental and figuring flaws in others. It is impressed upon us that every time we read the Quran, we should first learn it for ourselves and then perhaps employ it as a social service for correcting others.
We are told to instruct ourselves before engaging in a lecture to others. Enact upon certain righteousness with the same energy that you instruct your children on. Follow a certain virtue yourself before admonishing a friend for going astray. Be honest to your inner self before pointing fingers at others.
Talking of instructing children and not doing it ourselves, I stress upon them many a times to eat dates, a fruit full of nourishment and energy, like no other. And conveniently pass it over when offered to me. And for todays’ recipe I have used a combination of bananas and dates, energy powerhouses in their own rights, for children and adults alike. Frozen bananas are blitzed with softened dates, milk and ice to make an instant energy smoothie finally topped with toffee sauce. The sauce is optional although highly recommended.
