Gifts come in many shapes and sizes and I have broadly categorized them as follows:
I Belong to Adam Gift: The kind that has been wrapped, un-wrapped and then re-wrapped 123,456,789 times to be given ahead irrespective of whether it is for a newly married couple, or a baby shower gift or while extending commiserations. The kind that has been handed down since eons only to land in the cupboard, waiting for an occasion to be taken out and find an abode in someone else’s trash. (Livelong life)
Fake It Gift: Made in China, first class and second class (who cares really) fakes of bags, wallets and what not that are nicely wrapped in ‘original’ boxes and presented as Birthday gifts, Remember Me tokens and Going away memorabilia. Only to make the other person feel so very special. (thanks but not thanks).
Doorstep Gift: The kind that anonymously turns up at your door because perhaps the sender is stalking you, or doesn’t have time to personally gift it, or it was sent under duress. (There is a high chance of Doorstep Gifts turning into I belong to Adam Gift.)
Have i told you lately that i love you Gift: The kind that has received more thought than the cost or the size of the gift. They could be as simple as a string of fresh motia flowers or a hand written note. But certainly the kind that has been specially personalized for you - to warm your heart and bring a joyful tear or two.
Big, expensive, bling gifts might be highly appreciated but they wear out as fast as fashion. Personally, I think that gifts do not always have to be tangible. Giving someone your time and affection is as intangible as gets yet continues to reverberate in your heart for the longest possible time.
As the month of Fasting draws in to a close, Eid will be celebrated with joy and merriment, with constant clattering in the kitchen and chattering in the lounge. So here is an easy recipe to put together, which you can gift to your family and friends during Eid feasting. Vermicelli is gently fried in butter and cooked with milk and coconut cream till tender and soft. I have then topped it with chilled mango cubes and a generous dollop of whipped coconut cream.
Eid Greetings to all of you, happy gifting and happy eating!
